I am creating this post out of curiosity. Why? Because I am a musician and I am willing to learn about new bands.

I'm mostly into retro music, or pretty much anything from the 90s and before. My favorite type of music is new age, though, and I especially like anything made by Mannheim Steamroller. Nowadays they're most famous for their holiday music, but they got their start with the Fresh Aire series, and Fresh Aire 7 is one of my favorite albums, period.

Since you like new age, have you ever heard of Enya or Port Blue?

I'm into ANYTHING ranging from the age of wax cylinders and before right into the early 2000's. And GOOD modern artists like Adele, Gotye, Jack White, and whatnot.

I'm mostly into psychedelic rock and ethnic music. From the first area - both music from the time that genre was born, late 60s (the Doors, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and many not-as-well-known artists) and modern neopsychedelia (Liquid Sound Company, Vibravoid, More Experience...). The type of tracks I enjoy most are long, wandering improvisations.
The second - ethnic music, mostly Eastern - traditional Indian, Sufi music and so on. I also like what happens on the boundary between the two mentioned areas ("psychedelic" and "ethno"), which is the area of psychedelic folk - for example artists such as Lamp of the Universe.
I also like what the Polish composer Maria Pomianowska is doing. She started as a classical celloist, but developed a great interest in traditional non-European music, beginning with a scholarship during her studies to study the sarangi in India (a bowed instrument, in size somewhere between "our" viola and cello, but with a much more resonating, vibrating sound). Now she heads the Department of Non-European Music at the Musical Academy. Her experience even allowed her to participate in reconstruction of two old Polish instruments which were either known just from paintings or from a copy, but without knowledge what technique was used to play the instrument. These instruments, fiddle from Plock and suka, have become fairly popular in folk music circles here. Anyway, I have two of her records - "Silk Road Suite" and "Chopin on 5 Continents". The latter is really curious - based on Chopin's music, but arranged in very unusual ways, for example in the style of traditional Chinese, Persian or even African music.
Having said all that, I don't consider myself an expert. That is - maybe I know fairly much about music I like, but I don't have a good ear for music. I can't distunguish good and excellent sound quality, I find it very hard to learn how to play a melody on the piano after just having heard it (I have to keep retrying many times and comparing the notes I play to the melody I remember), I probably have quite a large vocal range for a compeletely untrained person, but often can't hold tune...
I may enjoy some mainstream music - for example I have a certain sentiment for Madonna's older songs - but generally it bores me. I don't even listen to the radio at all - I listen to records, but not to the radio, I watch movies from cassettes and DVDs, but don't watch TV. What I find annoying are some features such as (a small detail) "discoization of pop music" (that is, more and more electronic instruments in plain pop) and (a much bigger problem) monothematic character of mainstream music. All the time boring songs about love... leading a less conventional (asexual) lifestyle, I can say for sure there are more areas of life that aren't less interesting. You know... I don't want to say love is unimportant, no way, but I do think that ubiquitousness of love songs has a certain negative political influence. They become a part of a (sometimes unconscious) propaganda aimed at discouraging people from thinking about the broadly understood public sphere, at making them believe private happiness is all it takes... (And I strongly believe that "personal is political".) As I once wrote in my diary, "ideology of 'the other half of orange' has become a weapon against women's independence".
PS. And: I don't want to say that love is unimportant, but I DO think all this propaganda in favour of it makes people value friendship less. But this is already quite far from the topic of favorite music...

I tend to listen to a little bit of everything, and I'm not too picky when it comes to genres of music. Each genre has its good and bad artists/songs and I never really understood how some people seem to have the mindset of "every song that's *insert genre here* sucks". It never made any sense to me. Sure, the majority of mainstream stuff from a genre can be bad (for example, mainstream rap currently sucks and is just about the rappers bragging that they're better than everyone else), but that doesn't mean the genre doesn't have its really talented people.

As for what I mostly listen to, I listen to more classic rock bands than anything else. As you could probably tell from my username, I am a fan of The Beatles. I also enjoy Pink Floyd, Queen, Supertramp, and other classic rock groups. I also listen to the Japanese rock duo PUFFY, and I recently got into Daft Punk. And I also listen to The Aquabats, who used to be ska and are currently a rock band.

But really, I don't care what genre an artist is in so long as they make good stuff.

My musical interests are all over the map. But lately I've been listening to alot of U2-- primarily their latest album (Songs of Innocence), Achtung Baby and Zooropa.
