Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo has just been released on the iOS!
I always wondered how awesome it would be to have HE games on the iPhone/Pod. Well, it looks like Atari is taking a step in this direction by putting out Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo on the iOS!
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/putt-putt-saves-the-zoo/id474065395?mt=8&mid=52
Judging by the pictures, it seems to be modeled off either the 1995 or '99 version (I'm hoping it's the former), but they added a "Menu" function in place of the Quit button. Just a little announcement, I can see the direction this is headed in.
I really hope they re-release FF3 and all the later HE games on here, since they haven't received much love.

I've heard that there's also a Backyard Soccer app, but it's only a corner kick mini game.

I think this is a step in the right direction. Really, though, I wish that Atari would release clusters of Humongous games on DVD-ROM rather than port the wazoo out of them on random systems.
Let's just hope that they didn't rip off of the ScummVM team's code again. I don't want Apple taking the adventures off of the iTunes store because Atari couldn't be bothered to code the games themselves.

Nintendo has different policies compared to Apple. Greg told me that there were several SCUMM game ports that used the ScummVM on the iOS.

Actually, they aren't SCUMM engine games, per se, but many games that ScummVM supports are on the app store and using ScummVM's code to run. These are some examples...

Also note how they're all by the same developer... :/

They're releasing my favorite HE game and the one that hasn't received much attention?

PJS2 = Favorite HE game.
FF3 = The one that hasn't received much attention. It's never had a re-release.

I mean in America.
All the games before 1999 have had at least one re-release, but FF3 hasn't.

Should work in ScummVM now.
It's an updated/modified HE100 version of the game. They seemed to have removed all the cursor-updating code from the scripts themselves, so you're stuck playing with just the default cursor. EDIT: Except for the item cursors, but they still don't work in the retail binary
It also looks like the menu that now occupies the space where the Quit button used to be is hardcoded as the button still quits the game in ScummVM.

Really? That's... it? That's pretty sad, really... Well, I guess they put in more effort than the Wii ports, anyway.

Does it let you enable the INI settings?

Haven't looked at the iOS version scripts, but I would assume so. If you can build ScummVM, feel free to try it.Whatthe wrote:Does it let you enable the INI settings?
(I assume you don't mean in the retail version's interpreter ;))

Re: Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo has just been released on the iOS!
Bumping the topic here, I got a reply to an email I sent to Nimbus Games, and they confirmed that they're planning on releasing ports to the Android platform as well as iOS. They also mentioned that they would try to develop new installments if there is enough interest in the current games being ported. So, good news to those who have an Android device! (I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that they release it on the Amazon app market as well as Google's own market, since the Amazon app store is the only one I can get on my tablet. Shouldn't be a problem, since Atari has released several games on both already.)

I've got an Android! ;-) Oh, BTW, why couldn't've they released Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo on the PlayStation? Both the game and the console were released in 1995, surely?!
Re: Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo has just been released on the iOS!
Let's put it this way: Have you ever tried to play a point-and-click adventure game with a gamepad? It's not very fun. Just look at the Sega CD version of Monkey Island. Besides, they tried that with Pajama Sam 3, and it didn't work out.

Basically, you mean "It's pretty much impossible to play a point-and-click adventure game on a videogames console." May explain why the other ports for Putt-Putt Joins the Parade were cancelled...
Re: Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo has just been released on the iOS!
Actually, the ports of Broken Sword I and II on the PS1 weren't bad, and the PS1 versions of Discworld I and II were actually really good! Also of note is the console-only (Saturn and PS1) game Blazing Dragons, which is also awesome. Main difference here is effort. The PS1 port of PJS3 sucks because They Just Didn't Care.

I used to watch that program! :-O
Re: Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo has just been released on the iOS!
Cool, though I hear that the game is completely different from the TV show. Fitting, considering how it was created by Terry Jones!

According to Wikipedia, he is incoincidentally Welsh, and wrote many books during his life. (he still does) Speaking of Wales, there should be an article about Humongous videogames in Wales, like you always talk about me and Britain!
Re: Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo has just been released on the iOS!
Well, the only thing I've ever heard dubbed in Welsh is Spongebob Squarepants...
