Spy Fox AGS: Recruitment, Discussion Thread

Post by GeorgeQGreg on Fri Mar 15, 2013 5:34 pm

If you've been keeping up on things, you may know that a remake of Spy Fox: Dry Cereal is being worked on by me, and maybe by some other people, depending on how you define that, which started with an idea some forum users had. So I thought I'd start this thread to get this all a bit more organized.

Spy Fox AGS will be a remake of Spy Fox in the AGS engine with new 320x240 Hi-color graphics, newly recorded high quality music and voices, and new content, including expanded story, extra gameplay and more puzzles. Right now I'm the programmer. We need:

(and guess I might as well disclose this now: If I play my cards right you may be paid for your work. Long story. I'll break it if I can manage to get the issue sorted.)

Artist(s) to draw the graphics

Designer(s) / idea people/person to come up with extra fluff/work out what the interface should be like

Musician(s) to record a new soundtrack

Things we won't need until much later, but are handy to keep in mind:

A font (Yes really.) (I'll probably make one sometime.)

Voice actor(s) (or contact with the originals)

Someone to help with French translation

Someone to translate to Russian (and not suck!)

A Russian name for the main character/game (I propose Спай Факс.)

Talented Russian actors for Russian dubbing (Does that even exist??)

A name for the game in the first place (I suggest Spy Fox in Dry Cereal: The Lactose Cut)

Things that may help:

Coordination :D

Being able to be with each other in real life (Hey everyone! Come to Canada!)

Ok everyone, discuss!

Download the current prototype

The Lactose Cut - just awesome!
The appropriate Russian title would be either "Шпион Лис" or "Агент Лис" (these are the canonic translations). I think I could try my hand at Russian translation.

And of course, I'll continue throwing in ideas Fox: Smiling

Please! Let's ignore all of the official translations! They're... crap.

Ok, so for the record:

Spy Fox 1 (Fargus) Game is called Лис-Шпион (really) character is called Spy Fox, pronounced like English. Voice is like a mix between US English and French, but really bored sounding.

Spy Fox 2 (Fargus) Character and game called Шпион Лис. Voice sounds like Bart Simpson swallowing a lightbulb.

Spy Fox 3 (Fargus) Game called Spy Fox, yes written in English. Character called Фокс. Voice sounds fairly similar to US English one.

Spy Fox 1 and 2 (Official) Game called Агент Лис. But character is Джеймс Лис. Voice sounds like Fargus' Spy Fox 1.

Spy Fox 3 (Official) Same names as official 1 and 2, but different voice. It's impossible to really describe, just... really super bored sounding. Very obviously can't act.

Question time! What should the interface be like? Buttons, appearance, layout, function, stuff like that. Discuss!

That's what it is right now. I wonder how I'll be able to pull off the gem joke though, without getting illogical. (Or having a really specific verb.)

I just wanted to say that I like those more than the current GUI's visual outlook. But that's to say, Deirdra Kiai's "The Game That Takes Place On A Cruise Ship" does have some unusual options.

P.S. On a side note, we could create a banner saying "Spy Fox in Dry Cereal: The Lactose Cut" in order to advertise the project.

The GUI isn't interesting right now as it's not final. That's why I've thrown this question out. I'd like the GUI finalized sometime so we can have that part done, especially as obviously the GUI has a great effect on the design of the game.

About the Volcano/Gem paths. Coming to think of it, they'd probably work best if merged, like if the gem's location was the volcano's island, and your task would be to get to the island (with the help of Drydock?) and locate the gem. Never mind, I figured out what you meant by that. I'm an idiot and forgot how this game even works.

And say, wasn't William's secret fortress supposed to be in a volcano? That could be integrated too.

I'll record a soundtrack. Just tell me what it should sound like and I'll do it.

I could help with French translation. Don't have a complete vocabulary of the language, but I certainly know its grammatical rules well enough to structure sentences properly.

Sort of like a mix between Spy Fox 1 and 2, I'd say. Maybe with some original music, with a Monkey Island sort of vibe. (For the volcano.) If he still considers himself a part of this, try talking to Retrodude. He's the audio designer.

And one more idea: perhaps the gem could be hidden in some sort of crypt, and it could be something like the Kids' family mystery (similar to the Pierre Carchon's plotline in BS: Director's cut)?

I was thinking of in a sort of a temple, a bit like the opening bit of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

That's an interesting idea, but it was already done in Spy Fox 3 with the ruins of Chickle-Pichu.

Si tu saurais plus que moi, tu n'aurais pas besoin Google Translate. Aussi, pour "might" tu écrirais "Il se peut je sais plus que vous." Les Français n'abandonnent pas contingence. ;)

Expanding a bit on my idea: perhaps in the Gem subplot Spy Fox would have to uncover some family mysteries of the Kids, and in the scene with Russian Blue (the one where William gives her either the key, the punchcard and the diode) he would instead say something along the lines of "He would need that gem to disarm the Milky Weapon... Even I don't know where it is, let alone that pesky Spy Fox".

Then, I'm not so sure the scene makes sense anymore? Oh, also, we could really use some artists, particularly background.
