Enhanced "Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise" soundtrack!

Post by wileyk2012 on Sun Sep 16, 2012 10:49 am

Been a while since someone posted in this part of the forum, so I thought this would liven it up:
I'm sure many of you remember how Tom McMail's music score for "Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise" usually sounded somewhat simplistic (mostly in the Windows and 3DO versions), but compare that to THIS...

I got this by loading the MS-DOS version (updated CD-ROM version also on the Humongous Classics Collection) onto ScummVM, having the music play off my MacBook's CoreAudio general MIDI sound system. As a result, it sounds way different from the 3DO/Windows versions, and sounds more orchestral and full in most cases. It also helps bring some new life back into this game!
I have to admit, I think THIS is how the Windows version's music should have sounded, even if it were compressed into 22Khz or something. I also did a playthrough of the game with the music like this:

Any comments/opinions?

Good, but a Macintosh's MIDI card is almost the exact same as GS Wavetable, which I've got. I recommend you play the game with a soundfont, such as Chorium or Mixcraft (let me tell you that this soundfont is close to reality, but is still not perfect).

In ScummVM I use a soundfont called SGM. It makes the music sound very realistic and almost sounds live. I think my favorite soundtrack to listen to with it is Police Quest I VGA, since it sounds like an actual rock band.

When I played Putt-Putt Joins the Parade with SGM, it sounded a LOT like I was playing what could've been a Sega CD/Phillips CD-i version, or what Humongous could've used in Classics Collection!
