Game Rereleases Empty Game Rereleases

Post by MrEightThreeOne Sat Oct 22, 2011 6:17 pm

I decided to make this topic for all known game re-releases and their differences. Humongous was very fond of re-releasing their games, and they do have subtle differences between each. I'm making this to list all the ones that got re-releases. By the way, these are the logos I'm talking about when I refer to them:
-Humognous Entertainment Presents: The very basic logo that had no sound effects or anything. It just had the logo surrounded by a square, with "Presents" at the bottom.
-Humongous Entertainment: The second logo variation. The one with the drum roll followed by the old Junior Adventure fanfare.
-Humongous.com: Same as above, but "www.humongous.com" was added below the logo.
-Humongous Paper Flip: The one where Sam does the flip book and it bounces toward the screen.
-Infogrames 1: The static Infogrames logo.
-Infogrames 2: The color hysteria logo, where it gradually bends in and then looks like a spring.

Every HE classic
1992/93: Original releases, on floppy disks made for DOS and Macintosh. These have become rare.
1995: The Windows releases, and the easiest ones to spot. These were on CDs. They underwent several changes:
-The music was changed from MIDI to pre-recorded PCMs.
-A lot of the flashing lights in the background were removed.
-The cursor was changed from the yellow cursor to the standard white cursor.
-The game was changed so it would be more suited to run in Windows instead of DOS. Thus, several things were changed from being hotkeys to appearing in the pause menu.
-The screen can't scroll up. This means that all vibration effects were removed, and the transition in the closet for Fatty Bear was changed to a normal cut.
-The alt key, which originally sped the game up for no reason at all, now does nothing.
Game-specific changes:
-Putt-Putt Joins the Parade originally played "Pop Goes the Weasel" for the Jack-in-the-Box. The developers probably didn't like how it changed the music whenever you cranked the handle, so they changed it to be a normal sound effect. Still exists in the .HE4 file though.
-When running over the nails, a few sounds were added.
-The "Coming Soon" ad for Fatty Bear that occasionally happens when the game starts was changed to "Also Available".
-In the intro, the DOS version originally waited for the music after the title to finish, and then the sun would come up. It now cuts off.
-Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise added sound effects during the puppy chase.
-The line "I daresay that puppy is a scamp!" was added.
-When blowing up balloons, Gretchen originally had terrible sounding Mad Libs dialog. It was changed to be all in one sentence.
-In Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon, when playing Bear Stormin', the ground was slightly animated. It's now just a single color.
-The copyright dates were updated. For some strange reason, this was the only classic to do this.

Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds
1994: Original release. Not very easy to find.
1998: The first re-release, and probably the easiest one to find. This one has only a few subtle changes:
-All the 3D-ish cursors in the original release were slightly different from later HE games. They were much longer and thinner. This was changed in the 1998 version so the cursors now look like the standard short and think ones.
-The copyright dates were updated.
-The pause window was the Windows 95 style instead of the Windows 3.1 style.
-The opening logos were changed from the generic "Humongous Entertainment Presents..." to the "Humongous Entertainment/It's a Junior Adventure! (Blue variation)" logos.
2007: The "remastered" release. I know very little about this one, but this is what I do know:
-The opening logos were changed back to being the generic "Humongous Presents" logo, except now it uses the modern Humongous, Inc. logo.
-The copyright dates were moved from the title screen to the opening logo.
-The system compatibility was widened so it could play on modern computers.
-The title was changed to "Kelp Seed Mystery", probably because they wanted a shorter title.

Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo
1995: Original release. This one's a little annoying to find, but you can if you do some looking.
1999: First re-release, and painfully easy to find. This one actually has a few noticeable changes:
-The opening logos were changed from the generic "Humongous Entertainment Presents..." to the "Humongous.com/It's a Junior Adventure!" logos. Strangely, the "Jr. Adventure" logo used here is completely different from all other iterations.
-You can now take a picture of Mr. Baldini. From what I have seen, you can't do this in the original.
-All item cursors were colorized. They were black and white in the original.
-For unknown reasons, 3 music tracks were changed. The ones I'm aware of:
--The music for both giraffes was changed. In the original, it was more sad sounding and way more fitting IMO. In the re-release, it's more of jungle-sounding theme.
--Rescuing Sammy has a far more cheery-sounding theme here. It is more fitting, but it cuts off very randomly, so it's a little awkward.
--Rescuing Skeeter originally played a variation on the intro theme. Now you hear the same thing that you would hear if you were talking to Ms. Boa. It's very unfitting and out-of-place.
-The screen now adjusts to 640 x 480 on its own. In the original, if you didn't adjust it yourself, you got a huge black border.
-The pause windows were changed from Windows 3.1 style to Windows 95 style.
-A bug exists in this version that, to my knowledge, isn't in the original release. If you are at the other end of the river, but instead of clicking to go somewhere else you click on the space Putt-Putt gets off on, he starts talking. If you skip it here, the raft disappears and you can't get it back. How they managed to sneak this bug in, I have no idea.
2007: The "remastered" release. I haven't seen too much of this one, but it's not as easy to find as it might seem. The 1999 version was repackaged so many times that this one is outnumbered. But from what I do know, these are the differences:
-The opening logos were changed back to being the generic "Humongous Presents" logo, except now it uses the modern Humongous, Inc. logo.
-The copyright dates were moved from the title screen to the opening logo.
-The system compatibility was widened so it could play on modern computers.

Freddi Fish 2: The Case of the Haunted Schoolhouse
1996: Original release. Easy to find.
1999: First re-release. This one is equally easy to find. Differences:
-The screen now adjusts to 640 x 480.
-The opening logos were changed to "Humongous.com/It's A Junior Adventure! (Blue Variation)".
-The song at the beginning of the game has a short instrumental opening before the singing begins.
2002: A bit tough to find, but it can be found. Differences:
-The opening logos were changed to "Infogrames 2/Humongous Paper Flip".
-The copyright dates were removed.
2007: The "remastered" version. This one is actually kind of difficult to find. I didn't know about it for a while. Differences:
-The opening logos were changed back to being the generic "Humongous Presents" logo, except now it uses the modern Humongous, Inc. logo.
-The copyright dates were moved from the title screen to the opening logo.
-The system compatibility was widened so it could play on modern computers.
-The title was changed to "Freddi Fish: Haunted Schoolhouse Mystery".

Pajama Sam in "No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside"
1996: Original release, and very easy to find.
1999: Second release, and very rare due to the very sloppy job they did of it. Differences:
-The game now adjusts your screen resolution to 640 x 480 for you.
-Several voice clips were a bit messed up, from what I've heard.
-Here comes a real facepalmer. The wishing well has a few lines of dialogue taken from the Dutch version of the game. It makes absolutely no sense as to how this could have happened. It's even lip-synced properly! They may have used the Dutch version as the base code, but it's still really stupid.
-According to the ScummVM wiki, "examining the gold in the mine, after mining the gold, can cause a missing segment of speech (and subtitles), due to script bug (actor is set to the string color)".
2002: Better than the 1999 version, but still sloppy. Differences:
-The opening logos were changed to "Infogrames 2/Humongous Paper Flip".
-According to Hondo20132, the options menu has the option to turn off printing, despite the fact that there is nothing to print in the entire game. Even stranger, they seem to have mislabeled it - it triggers the slow machine inventory instead.
-When clicking on the "Dogs Playing Poker" picture in the dance room, one of the animations from clicking it causes it to overlap the couch.
-According to the ScummVM wiki, "the game triggers an error when clicking on the grandfather clock, since two images are flagged as to reamp the palette, but are missing the actual RGBS blocks." Don't ask me what that means, I have no idea.
-According to Hondo20132, the blue sock where King is rusted appears as a thin line, but it's "click box" is still the same size.
2007: The "remastered" edition. Known differences:
-The opening logos were changed back to being the generic "Humongous Presents" logo, except now it uses the modern Humongous, Inc. logo.
-The system compatibility was widened so it could play on modern computers.

Spy Fox in "Dry Cereal"
1997: Original release. Kind of annoying to find.
2001: Not really fair to call this a re-release, but this is the British dub that somehow crossed into North America. I won't compare the games, but as of now it is totally unknown how this happened. It's a really stupid slip-up.
2002: The second release. Known differences:
-The opening logos were changed to "Infogrames 2/Humongous Paper Flip".
-The screen now adjusts to 640 x 480.
2007: The "remastered" release. Known differences:
-The opening logos were changed back to being the generic "Humongous Presents" logo, except now it uses the modern Humongous, Inc. logo.
-The system compatibility was widened so it could play on modern computers.

Putt-Putt Travels Through Time
1997: Original release.
2002: Second release. Known differences:
-The opening logos were changed to "Infogrames 2/Humongous Paper Flip".
-The screen now adjusts to 640 x 480.
-The copyright dates were removed.
-The intro now has a fade-in.
-In the "Time Continuum" song, the part with all the books has them colorized instead of being monochrome.
2007: The "remastered" edition. Known differences:
-The opening logos were changed back to being the generic "Humongous Presents" logo, except now it uses the modern Humongous, Inc. logo.
-The system compatibility was widened so it could play on modern computers.

All other games that weren't mentioned here only had one release. I'd be here all night if I did the Junior Arcades and such, so I excluded those.

I've heard from several people that a few of the .ini settings won't work in the 1999 release of Freddi Fish 2. More than that I don't know, since nobody has given a specific example.

I have a version of Freddi Fish 1 from 1998 and it's EXACTLY the same as the "1996" version you described. Perhaps you mixed the dates up?

I've also just remembered that the Norwegian version of Freddi Fish that I have is the 2007 (or maybe 2000?) port. And the job they did on it is REALLY weird.

About the "glitched blue sock sprite" thing in the Pajama Sam 2002 rerelease I told you about, it actually only appears like that when you enter the area from another room. If you go to the save/load screen, or trigger a cutscene that changes the scene for a little bit, it'll suddenly appear as it normally would.

BTW which room has the "invisible sock bug"?

Post by wileyk2012 Sun Jan 29, 2012 9:30 pm

Hmm, regarding the sound effects added in "Putt-Putt Joins the Parade" when he runs over the nails, I played the DOS version on ScummVM, and those sound effects showed up for some strange reason! They don't when played on a real DOS system or DOSBox or whatever.

I also actually recall having CD-ROM versions of the DOS version of "Putt-Putt Joins the Parade" and "Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise" as a kid. HE also offered a trade-in program around 1993-1994 for trading in your old floppy disks of games for CD-ROM versions for a small fee (it's like HE was aware that floppys were soon to become obsolete during that time!)
I know the DOS version of "Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon" is actually included on the post-1995 CD-ROM releases in addition to the Windows version. I guess this was for if someone wanted to run the new version on an old MS-DOS system, they could do so. IDK if the other classics reissued since 1995 came with the DOS version.

And speaking of "Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon," there were actually a few tweaks and modifications to the Windows version around 1998, presumably for better compatibility on Windows 98 and later. (The box for the 1998 version eliminated the "It Talks!" caption, added the "It's HUMONGOUS CLASSICS!" logo on top, and has newer InfoGrames and HE logos on the bottom.) The copyright was left as 1993-1995, and at first glance looks exactly the same (the pause menu is the same as the 1995 version), but once you get going, some oddities show up. My cousins had the 1995 version, but I got the Humongous Classics Collection in late 1998/early 1999, and came with this 1998 version.
With the 1995 version, if you hold down the Alt key, it DOES speed up. The 1998 version removed this weird glitch (my brother and I loved that Alt speed-up glitch when we were little, because the voices reminded us of Alvin and the Chipmunks!)
I think the stars in the background DID twinkle in the 1995 version, not so in the 1998 version. Additionally, the key you select would flash in the original DOS version as Putt-Putt says "I guess I'll take, this one." It does flash in the 1995 version, but not in the 1998 version! (This is if you play it on Windows, if you play it on ScummVM it does flash.)
The background still doesn't shake during the "launch" sequences, but it does when you play it on ScummVM (not the old DOS-style wiggling, but ScummVM's generic shaking effect). Maybe they were going to try and make the screen shake in some way for the Windows version, but never got around to it?
The "MOON CITY GAS" sign no longer blinks properly; only "MOON" is illuminated. The green goo river no longer moves underneath the Man in the Moon's palace.
When you have subtitles on, in the original, when Robbie Radar is talking to Putt-Putt in the gas station, his text color is green like when he is at the apartment, but in the 1998 version, at the gas station scene, his text color is the same as Putt-Putt's color (depending what color he is at the time!)

Just felt like sharing

I think the nails thing might be a sound-mixing issue. And yes, they did include the DOS versions inside the Windows versions. Thank goodness too, otherwise they'd be extremely rare!

As for the '95 box, the Infogrames logo was added MUCH later on. Also, are you sure '98 versions exist? I looked into the files of my HE Classics disc, and all of them were last altered on '95. I'm pretty sure you're thinking about the DOS version, because I don't think a such '98 version exists.
As for the key flashing, technically it does flash...in 256 color mode. 16 bit color and higher can't show this properly though, thus it doesn't seem to flash. However, when you're picking the key, pause the game and move the pause window around the key. If you do it on the right frame, you'll slowly turn the key darker. This trick works on other glitchy parts, too!
Yeah, for some strange reason, they took out all the light flashing effects in the Windows version. They also did this to Putt-Putt Parade, noticeable on the theater outside and on the bridge.
I actually never knew about the subtitle miscoloring. Weird...

The Infrogames logo was on the 1998 or 1999 box, not the 1995 version.
As for the 1998 version, I think this only applied to "Putt-Putt Goes To the Moon." It might actually be how Windows 98 and higher handle the games. I will be uploading a YouTube video showing these and some other funny glitches/surprises. Unlike my other videos, where I played them using ScummVM (since I use a MacBook), for this I played Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon on a Windows XP emulation/virtual machine on Parallels 7.

I found another difference for FF2.

In the original version, there's an extra bit of music at the start of that song in the beginning.

It should also be noted that for some reason, the DOS version of Fatty Bear was updated on the Humongous Classics Collection with the same new dialogue and sound effects found on the Windows reissue from 1995. This includes the elimination of the bad mad-libs dialogue (including stuff like "It looks like I found the letter ... P!" and "That's... three... balloons, Fatty Bear... Two... more to go!"), Matilda's additional lines (including "I dare say that puppy is a scamp!") and Fatty Bear having to point out the obvious at everything (even when you open the garage door, he repeats "Now I can get in the garage!" again.)
I wonder if all this dialogue was actually originally recorded in 1993 when the game was made, but was originally unused until the game files were updated (most of the files for the DOS version on the Humongous Classics Collection have a spring 1993 date on them.) It also has the scroll and shake effects intact (there are additional "shake" effects during the "Chase the puppy" sequence when the puppy causes off-screen damage along the way.) But, unlike the Windows version, Fatty Bear's subtitle color is the original yellow, not brown like the Windows version.

I also loaded the Mac version of "Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon" on ScummVM, but so far it's pretty much identical to the DOS version (complete with the large yellow cursors, instrumental opening theme and the MIDI soundtrack.) I might test it on my Power Mac G4 computer (which can also boot into Mac OS 9, and is actually a pretty powerful machine with an 867 Mhz G4 processor and 1 GB of RAM) and see how it operates on that.

Also worth of note is a possible bug fix in the 1998 version. In that "Feed the Turtles" mini-game in the 1994 original, there is no background music accompanying it. But in the 1998 version, you hear the usual Freddi Fish 1 music cues during the mini-game!
This is also probably the only reissue that HE actually took the time to work on; it most likely did not use a foreign version for the code base and they actually went and fixed up any glitches, along with the usual menu/logo updates and the 3D angled directional arrows changed from the unusual thinner prototypes to the standard post-1995 versions. Too bad they got lazy in 1999...

They began using foreign version code bases, and there were some glitches that suddenly appeared (look at the 1999 reissues of "Pajama Sam 1" and "Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo" to see what I mean.)
